Idomeneo is an opera seria by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, based on a libretto by Giambattista Varesco. It premiered at the Cuvilliés Theatre in Munich on January 29, 1781. The opera tells the story of King Idomeneo of Crete, who is faced with the dilemma of sacrificing his son as punishment for a vow he made to the god Neptune. The opera is known for its complex and powerful music, which displays Mozart's mastery of both vocal and orchestral writing. It also features several arias that have become popular in the concert repertoire, including "Fuor del mar" and "Il padre adorato". Despite its initial lack of success, Idomeneo has come to be regarded as one of Mozart's finest works and a masterpiece of the operatic repertoire.
